Mongolian Poetry 55: Old Photo Album

A poem of reminiscence by Zava Damdin Rinpoche (b. 1976).

OLD PHOTO ALBUM

(English Translation)

When I open my thick old photo album,
every joy is like a train receding into the distance.
Every sorrow is like a cracked mirror of this brief, passing world.
Time itself is like the wing of a bird that has brushed past.

The youthful portraits of my father and mother shine full of inspiration, as though ready to bring forth history anew.
The portraits of various ancestors and forebears gaze into the distance, as if telling ancient legends.
The portraits of the great and exalted Bogds can still be felt, gazing through from another world.
A shadow-portrait taken of all my brothers, sisters, elder and younger, recalls the courteous ways of this living world.

Beings, rare as stars in daylight, and unchanging, are seldom seen, even in photographs.
When I see the portrait of one who has abandoned themselves and surrendered their tender heart to others, my own heart aches.
The photograph taken in the morning sun, riding my grandmother’s dear light brown blaze-faced horse, makes me long for her.
The photograph of the girl who stirred my ardent heart to write poems, is still hidden, tucked behind the other photographs.

The laughter-filled photographs of friends who, out of petty envy, brought down the great deeds created by nobler beings.
Many companions who once sat diligently on the path of learning, then fell away, also appear as if hollowed out.
The many inconstant ones, passing through many seasons and going about without shame, stand leaning together as if of one face.
Friends who had done no deed of merit to speak of, yet crept behind, waiting for their own advantage, stand behind and in front as well.

I took a special photograph of Lady Moon, I was not able to take a good photograph of Brother Sun.
Although no one captured in a photograph the moment of a great being’s precious work, it remains clear in the heart.
Yet when one sits again and again on the sigh-inducing steppe, writing songs and sitting for shadow-portraits, the Goddess of Art is pleased.
Each of these images is a face of remembrance, telling history and remaining a trace.

The boy who sits in the chamber of inner artistry.

Хуучин зургийн зузаан цомгоо нээвээс л
Баясал бүхэн алсран одсон галт тэрэг шиг
Гуниг бүхэн зуурдын энэхэн орчлонгийн хагархай толь шиг
Цаг хугацаа илж өнгөрсөн шувууны далавч шиг аж

Аав ижийн залуугийн хөрөг ирээдүйн шинэ түүхийг авч ирэхээр урам зориг дүүрэн гэрэлтэнэ
Алимад элэнц хуланцын хөрөг нүгүүд эртний домог өгүүлэх мэт гүн бөгөөд алсыг ширтэнэ
Агуу дээд богдсын хөрөг нүгүүд өөр орчлоос одоо ч инагш нэвт тольдож буй ану мэдрэгдэнэ
Ах эгч дүү бүгдээр татуулсан сүүдэр бөгөөс аху орчлын тахимдуу ёсыг сануулах аж

Өдрийн од мэт ховор агаад хувирах үгүй агч цөөн төрөлхийтэн нүгүүд зураг дор бас л цөөхөн үзэгдэнэ

NOTES

Portrait translates хөрөг (khörög), a portrait or likeness, often of a person. Photograph translates зураг (zurag), the more general Mongolian word for a picture, image, or photograph. Shadow-portrait translates сүүдэр (süüder), literally “shadow”, which can carry an older, more poetic sense of a photographic likeness. I use the three terms separately here to preserve the doha’s subtle movement between formal portraits, ordinary photographs, and the more evocative idea of a person’s shadow or presence being caught in an image.

Translation of Buddhist poetry (doha) is always an interpretation into another culture. Any errors in this regard are entirely my own, and for these I humbly apologise.
