Intermedia 15: Цэнxэpийн гoлoop нутаг минъ

“Цэнxэpийн гoлoop нутаг минъ” (Tsenxepiin goloor nutag miin) is one of Byambasuren Sharav’s eloquent and concise works for piano. Many years ago, Mongolia’s Zava Damdin Rinpoche (1976- ) encouraged me to explore composer Sharav’s music and over the years, as I studied the voicings, the style etc, I have grown to love his thoughtful music so very much!  I hope you enjoy listening to this example, or learning to play it if that’s your thing.

Notes

This study is for solo piano. How very fortunate his students must have been, to have studied with a trained primary school teacher who was also a pianist and composer of beautiful music.

This composition is in key of Em and interestingly uses polymeter, more than one time signature in the one piece of music. The notation moves between 3/4 and 4/4 time.  In terms of the overall sound and texture, voicings include, in addition to Em, G6, Db dim, C, B7, Bm7, E7, D7sus2 or 4, with the final Em+9 chord adding a suspended and ambiguous final touch.

As an aside, this weekend, the National Naadam Festival is being held in Ulan Bator during Mongolia’s annual national holiday from 11 to 13 July. Since 2010, Naadam (Mong. Наадам ) has been on UNESCO’s Representative of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. How fortunate we are!
