Mongolian Poetry 29: If You Should Miss Me

If You Should Miss Me” is another of Zava Damdin Rinpoche’s poems. Here is a beautiful interpretation by the young Mongolian scholar, Naro.

IF YOU SHOULD MISS ME

(English language interpretation)

If you should miss me

Pick up the fallen leaf before you

And gaze upon it with care

There, my letter shall be read.

If you should remember me

Go to the shore of the sea

And listen closely to each rolling wave

There, my poem shall be heard.

If you should long for me

Sit and watch the moon’s reflection

Upon the mirrored surface of the lake

There, the image held within my heart shall appear.

If you should think of me

Befriend the whispering breeze

Let thought arise and engrave it within your heart

Then, the meaning of my words shall be understood.

(Original Mongolian)
